When your content plan gets hijacked

... (in a good way)

You know how we start! Proof that this isn’t AI—

I’m writing this from Drift Coffee in Wilmington cramming it in before a meeting. This morning my barista asked when I switched to decaf.

I was like, “HUH?”

She said, “Yesterday your mobile order was decaf…”

Well—that explains why I felt like I could go to sleep while working from home yesterday after my quad shot latte.

Workspace for Monday

So yeah. Even when you think you’re doing something with intention… you can accidentally hit decaf.

And that’s what today’s newsletter is about:
Creating content with intention, but leaving room for it to surprise you.

Welcome back to UNFLTR

The newsletter that helps you untangle your podcast & content holdups and get to work.

Quote of the week

The Reel That Wasn’t the Plan

A few days ago, on of the “walls on wheels” in my studio setup collapsed—two freaking hours before a client flew in to record some podcasts.

I did what any sane person would do - I let other people know lol. For some reason that always helps.

Stress was pretty high. F-bombs were flying and I don’t cuss much anymore.

And then… my wife and daughters showed up like 3 angels.

They helped clean, reset, and rebuild the setup - a totally different one that I had planned.

It wasn’t ideal—but it was real. And that’s the point of UNFLTR - it’s not about perfection, it’s about reality.

So of course I filmed the fixing upping— not the original behind-the-scenes reel I intended so people could see me prepping for a recording session.

What landed was the moment—not the plan. I got a LOT of DMs advocating for that kind of vulnerability.

Your Most Impactful Content Might Be the One You Didn’t Plan For

That clip wasn’t viral and definitely wasn’t clever.

But it showed something people don’t usually get to see. The shit show of business and creating.

I hope it showed:

Investment (my family’s as well).

Tension.

Support.

Leadership.

Family.

That wasn’t the goal—but it became the moment.

So What’s the Point?

CONTENT STRATEGY MATTERS.

But don’t let “strategy” stop you from capturing the truth. Authenticity isn’t lost when something doesn’t go according to plan - it’s enhanced.

Some of the best stories come from the days where things go off script.

So keep recording.
Keep posting.
Keep showing up.

Even on decaf days. Oh - my barista and I now have an agreement that if that decaf ever shows up again in an order that I must’ve been taken hostage or something.
