They thought it was about video
... it wasn’t.
You know how we start! Proof that this isn’t AI—
It’s dark and rainy on this Monday morning which means convincing my dog to outside to go potty is going to be a challenge.
Welcome back to UNFLTR
The newsletter that helps you untangle your podcast & content holdups and get to work.

Quote of the week
"Every piece of imperfect content still brings your closer to making much better content than you used to."
— Me 😁

They Thought It Was About Video 101
The last couple weeks I decided to host two workshop at my content studio in Wilmington. Both were billed as Video or Podcasting 101.
One had a regional manager for a well-known gym franchise.
One had a real estate agent.
Another had a business owner and a long-time photographer.
They all came in thinking they were going to learning some basics about tech—gear, filming, and all that stuff. So did I actually.
But it was easy to see almost right away, I realized the real problem wasn’t how they were creating content…
It was what they were creating—and why it didn’t really feel like it was landing.
Everyone Thinks They’re Doing It Right
First off, “right” is super subjective. But a lot of times, myself included, I don’t follow my gut - I follow what I think I should be doing (based off what everyone else is doing).
The reality is we don’t realize we’re tangled up until someone starts combing the spaghetti in our brains. We have so many things we want to experiment with, but we talk ourselves out of it with the quickness.
Most creators (especially aspiring ones) are just doing what they’ve seen other people do.
Not what actually works for them.
Not what their audience needs.
These workshops became content therapy real freaking quick and I loved it!

Let’s ideate so we can CREATE.
What Happened Next: Real Content Breakthroughs
We actually never talked cameras because we never stopped talking audience, and then I could see things starting to click for everyone.
People started generating content ideas like:
Addressing objections they hear all the time
Breaking down stressful pain points in plain language
Focusing on one audience problem per idea, not five
The real estate agent said she’s always asked, “How do we know when our house is photo ready??”
That became a full content pillar right freaking there:
What ruins a listing before it even hits the market?
Dirty Tubs
Pets / Pet hair
Too many pictures up
Ignoring surfaces
Exotic paint
etc

Vibe Shift
I saw people go from “What gear should I use?” to light bulb moment after light bulb moment.
Some were already creating with decent numbers that they didn’t hate.
Some were hesitant to start.
Some were stuck in overthinking.
But once we built out pillars rooted in their audience’s real questions,
they got it. They saw the point; it’s kind of hard not to.
They realized content isn’t about showing off—it’s about showing up the way people need you to. (hint: Educationally, Entertaining, or both)
What Actually Makes Content Work?
I’m kind of relieved we didn’t talk cameras because clarity is just more important and tangible by far. It just requires introspection and work that doesn’t feel like work.
Who are you talking to?
What do they need?
What are they afraid of?
Where are they stuck?
YOU KNOW THESE THINGS!!!!!!!!
Answer those—and you’re 80% ahead of most creators online. And trust me - it’s not about the views, likes, and comments as much as it is knowing you’re reaching the people you need to.

Content You Should Check Out
Trying to up the pacing in my content and editing with a different software. I feel like it’s time to start editing on a laptop again. Here’s a reel about redirecting a podcast guest when they are just not delivering…
